ISS/SIC Foundation Travel Scholarship
The International Society of Surgery Foundation (ISS/SIC Foundation) will offer a number of travel grants to young surgeons from developing countries who have demonstrated interest in teaching and research. The award will permit the recipient access to the 44th Congress of the ISS/SIC at International Surgical Week ISW 2011 in Yokohama, Japan, August 28-September 1, 2011. Awardees will have their registration fee waived. The award is to be a contribution towards travel, hotel and living expenses. Please note that the award does not guarantee total coverage of these costs, which must be met from your own resources.

Applicants must be graduates of Schools of Medicine and younger than age 40 years. Applicants whose careers are in the developing stage are deemed more suitable candidates than those in senior academic positions. Please include your date of birth in the application and a photograph preferably of passport size. Applications will be accepted only when the applicant is in surgical practice, teaching or research for a minimum of one year following completion of all formal training.

Applicants must have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and/or research in accordance with the standards of the applicant's country of origin. They should provide separate lists of all published scientific journal articles, book chapters and abstracts (avoid articles in press), and a short statement of personal goals and career objectives in the discipline of surgery. Since the proceedings of the ISS/SIC Congress are in English, it is expected that applicants have a working knowledge of this language. Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from not more than three of their colleagues, one of whom must be the chairman of the department of surgery in which they hold their appointment. The chairman's letter must include a specific statement detailing the nature and extent of the teaching and other academic involvement of the applicant.

Further information and travel award applications for the 2011 Yokohama Congress can be obtained from the Foundation office or the ISS/SIC website (www.iss-sic.ch). Applications must be submitted electronically on or before December 31, 2010. Successful applicants will be notified by March 31, 2011. The award must be used for the Yokohama meeting. It cannot be postponed. Applicants who receive the award are expected to submit an abstract that will be evaluated for presentation at a travel scholar free paper session in Yokohama. Travel scholars are required to submit a report of the experience provided through the scholarship to the Foundation office at the completion of the meeting.
